I've also had some horrible experiences with AT&T customer service (I didn't think anyone could be worse than Sprint). They really need to learn something from Apple. What they should have told you was to go into Settings>General>Network>Data Roaming and turn date roaming off. Chris Anderson also had a huge bill when he was traveling.
