I’m truly thrilled to add Prof. Larry Marshall to the next Heather Gold Show: My Needs/ Your Needs.
Larry was one of my professors in law school and was the driving force behind getting Rolando Cruz off of death row and legal work and advocacy that eventually led Gov Ryan of Illinois to commute the the sentences of all prisoners on death row before he left office.Â
He’s a passionate teacher and a man of impeccable integrity and I only wish I’d listened to him more when I was in law school. But then I might be a lawyer today.
I am really honored by the killer group we have on the show and I know they will spark an excellent conversation for us all.
A brilliant piece by Dr. Rachel Remen.
There is a distance between ourselves and whatever or whomever we are fixing. Fixing is a form of judgement. All judgement creates distance”
My father is a doctor. I learned about fixing first-hand when I was dropped off a finishing school as a young teen to be fixed up. At that age I wasn’t able to see to the intention underneath. The helplessness and fear that can lead one to fix. If you grow up learning that fixing is a form of love, you can experience it that way. I too am all too tempted to think I can fix almost any problem or person.
Who tries to fix you? Who or what do you try to fix?
My Needs / Your Needs is the theme for The Heather Gold Show this month. Join us live for the conversation in San Francisco on February 11th.
I don’t. To me this was the entire point of registering Independent. At the time I thought: “Damn, if the Democratic party can’t get a liberal, Jewish, Canadian queer chick like me to register Democrat, they’re in trouble.”But this point, of focussing on our shared problems and doing things to make them better entirely eludes Stanley Fish, who blogged today Against Independent Voters. In his lofty NYT estimation, Independents don’t really want to stand for anything except avoid politics which we hate. (more…)
The next THGS theme is Service, or My Needs / Your Needs. GuestJeff Veen is puzzled this tension as it relates to making stuff (in his case web design)–how do you have the humility to serve others (which he thinks make good web design) and satisfy yourself?
Our second guest will probably be a wonderful erotica writer, poet and Intersex activist and our third will hopefully be someone who has dedicated their life to serving others.Â
Live Show: Monday February 11th 7:30pm. Buy tix or bake (email subvert at the same word dot com).Â
Service is, to me, about meeting a need. What is it to you? Â Â
I’m working on the next Heather Gold Show. The theme? My Needs / Your Needs. We’re talking about service.
Jeff Veen says the best web designers have to have empathy in order to serve the users needs rather than their own. But what about the creator?Â
I just got married and it seems like a major life commitment to the conundrum of meeting my own needs and my partner’s too.  It seems to provide a solution too, but it’s not one I can yet articulate.
Know someone great who’s committed to the service of others? Â Â Â
Heather conversates with  the Emmy-winning, formerly homeless Tanene Allison, digital nomad Ben Cerveny, therapist and Columbian emigrant German Walteros, and you. Is your home created by geography, biology, language, something or someone else? In a global era, where do we belong most? Listen to the entire 90-minute show.
As always, we encourage you to participate in the conversation. If you have comments or feedback about what you heard or saw on the show, please feel free to blog, twitter, YouTube or otherwise express yourself and let us know in the comments. We’re listening.
Heather mixes Lawrence Lessig, comedian Aundre the Wonderwoman, marketer Deb Schultz and the “audience” about Earnestness in Politics. Is it possible? What about earnestness at work, in the corporate environment?
This is a Larry’s alpha version of a talk on his new project on corruption.  It’s an hour long, very interesting and touches on impeachment, authority and culture. He’ll be discussing the project on corruption at The Heather Gold Show this Friday. Buy tix for this Friday’s show on Earnestness.Â
